How important are thumbnails?

If you have really bad thumbnails on YouTube but your videos are good, do you think it's still possible to grow your channel a lot and get a decent amount of views?

I think thumbnails are fairly important since they're the first thing the viewers see and grabbing a viewer's attention with a really nice thumbnail will probably net you more views than a video with a not so good thumbnail that someone just might scroll past.

I believe thumbnails are arguably one of the most important aspects of a channel. It's the initial thing that pulls people in, it would be very difficult to be tempted to click into a video without it looking worth watching on initial inspection. I think it would be very close to impossible to grow your channel with below average thumbnails, especially with the amount of competition that we have when starting out

I think thumbnails can help with getting views but there are many big youtubers or small youtubers who are doing well without good thumbnails. You can still grow your channel :D

They are important no doubt but catchy titles with very original and or unique content will probably trump all factors. Thumbnails are like the extra icing on the cake so to speak.

Is it possible? Yes, however people respond better to visual stimulation. That's why a lot of people always use either cats, boobs, etc on thumbnails, and usually they get a ton of views.

I find thumbnails to be one of the most important parts of a video, because it is the first impressions someone gets of what the video will be like. If your thumbnail does not stand out, or is not interesting, then a potential viewer may think your video will be that way, and continue scrolling to find one that catches their eye. If you make a great thumbnail, people are more likely to click on the video.

Definitely very important. Less so if you're well known (word of mouth gets you a lot of clicks in that case). I find a good thumbnail should be a good mix of content (what the video actually is), branding (your unique spin so it stands out), and something click worthy (this sometimes gets a bit clickbait-ey, which, while being kind of bad form, is definitely effective, look at pewdiepie or jennxpenn).

Definitely important, especially if your videos are in the extremely saturated market.

First impression determines if the user decides to watch them or not.
