How do you write your gaming commentary?

Hi, i have been wondering to myself a lot recently how people write/prepare for their commentary for gaming videos.

I have seen some people who just improvise and some people who prepare a whole script - both ways are good depending on how you prefer to talk.
I like to just go straight for it and hope for the best but most of the time i'll record the audio a few times and see which one turns out the best.

I have tried improvising numerous times but i'm currently dreadful at it as i continuously use filler words (Um, like, etc.). Although when improvising you can go into the topic further and go off topic slightly i don't like this way of commentary (For my own videos).

I also have wrote a whole script but i suck at following it and i felt it was too restrictive. And when you prepare the script before hand you can forget to put something in and if you are 10 minutes in to the commentary before you remember the information you forgot it would be a pain to have to do the whole thing again.

So, how do you write your commentary for your gaming videos?

I've never seen anyone who prepares a script for gaming commentary :') gaming commentaries (especially let's plays) are mainly improvised

Scripted gaming commentary...? That seems boring to be watch, imo. (Unless its a review or something)
I always improvise, which is why most of my videos are me screaming XD

When I'm reviewing something, I write out a short list of things I need to touch on and my rating information. When I'm playing something just to play it, I improv the whole thing. Nothing is a full script with me.

I don't understand how you would script a gaming commentary.

I just improvise, let things that come to my head go out through my mouth and sometimes from the heart. I sometimes need to make some tweeks here and there, but if I'm going to take the time to script it out. Then that'll go to my main vlog content.

I research things about the game to get people started off.

Then once things start picking up it's mainly improvising.

Nice part about editing is that you can get rid of parts that are boring.

I don't script. I just do it all off the cuff. The first videos that are on my channel now were just a test to see what people wanted to see as an experiment before I went wild with my own ideas. I scripted those videos and hated them. So no more script.

Hmm, I don't know anyone who scripts a gaming commentary, but I understand your issues with improvising.

I also use a lot of filler words (like, and, um, ahhhhhh) and sometimes even just blank out for a moment if I don't know what to say. Luckily though that's what audio editing is for! ;D And perhaps if there are topics or issues you'd like to discuss during the commentary, just jot down some notes to keep with you when recording. Like in school when you had to give a speech and could only have a few index cards with you? Basically that, but with games and no one is staring at you.

Also, maybe you have stories about the game or other relevant thing to talk about. If you're reviewing it (or just want to give a few critiques during the video) you could touch on what you think of the graphics, the controls (are they smooth or clunky? hard to get used to?), character design, funny dialogue, etc etc. And you can always make jokes, too, if you like adding humor into it! :3

I'm sure the first (and maybe second... and third) video will be perhaps a bit awkward to do, have pauses, etc. But you'll get comfortable after you've done a few and I think you'll also find a style of your own as well!

I just stretch out. smoke a cigarette and play for a bit then im on autopilot once I restart. If it goes well I keep it. If it sucks I redo or scrap it.
