So I've been wanting to do this for a long time. I want to give my videos a filmy touch so:

a.) Any tips for a filmy touch?
b.) How do you do this:

v=2LH_ukvlT3A

(at 00:05 when the two black bars close the video?)

I feel like it gives you that film touch. I really want to do this but without FCP.

It will be an effect that you can get in editing software, just look through all the transition effects in your software

it's widescreen bars keyframed in, get bars and keyframe them to come in

Tips for filmic look:

• Subtle camera pans and zooms (but not shaky - use a steadicam)
• Shallow depth-of-field
• Add film grain
• Reduce saturation
• Color-grade your footage (DaVinci Resolve Lite is free)
• Use subtle music
• And yeah, use 2.35 widescreen

As far as getting the letterboxing without using editing effects, just overlay a transparent PNG like this:

Yeah it sounds like an effect which you can find in your editing software then look for transitions to see if you find it.
