HELP!!

Okay so only have 4 usb ports on my Mac 1 of which I use for a usb hub. I recently brought a 4tb hard drive for backups so I could use my other 1tb hard drive to record RAW footage. To make room I had to plug my 1tb hard drive into my usb hub. I use elgato software to record my Xbox gameplay but now whenever I click stop recording it freezes! The only thing I have changed is that I'm saving it to my external drive rather than my internal drive. Now my usb hub is powered via usb so what I'm wondering is would it help if I had a powered usb hub. Please help I will give more info if needed
 
Usb 3.0 but the hub is 2.0. I have to force quit the software it saves some of the file but when I reopen the software the file gradually gets larger and larger till it allows me to open it
