Help with my soft boxes?

Hey guys, anyone any good with lighting?? I got two soft boxes off ebay a few weeks ago, tried using them to film a video, and it just looks so unflattering and strange, does anyone know how far away from you they should be? Any other tips? I'm lost...

Personally when I film at college with soft boxes I have one around a meter above the camera aiming at the person/object then use another pointed at the ceiling or a corner of the room to just backlight everything nicely.. as for distance the last one I used we put a defuser on it and the actors where around 2-3 meters away from it.

I'm on an expert on lighting, I normally just keep messing around with the lights and keep looking at the viewfinder until it looks good :p

okay, thank you!! Sounds like a plan, will mess around with them until the look decent :)

Oh, you could also have one lighting you from the side or behind (out of shot of course) instead of having them both hitting your face/front :)
