Help! Sound cuts out during clip (in editing software only)

Tipsy Tricks

I've Got It
Sony Handycam HDR-XR260 shoots the video (.m2ts file). Preview on camcorder plays audio.

Download to computer. Clip has audio.

Import the clip into Adobe Premiere Elements 11. Clip has audio for a bit (sometimes 20s, sometimes a minute) then the sound abruptly stops and doesn't return.

Not all clips are affected. Happens randomly, but consistently.

Please tell me someone has a genius insight that will rid me of this awful problem!

It sounds like your computer is not keeping up with your needs, I have problems with sound not playing right away when I have a lot of video and effects going. I don't know if elements is the same as premiere but you can try "rendering the work area" to speed things up

For some reason the Adobe Suites have trouble reading audio from Sony Cameras. It is some sort of codec issue that the software has. My two sony cameras have no audio completely in my software. I wouldn't doubt if you were in the same boat. In order to fix this you need to make sure that you have all the codecs necessary for the sony camera to work correctly. If you can't find the one you need or you do find it but it still doesn't work try converting your files and it should work fine.

Sony codecs are weird and give a lot of issues in most softwares for some reason.

I hear you, but I don't think that's the case here. After I tried rendering it (no luck), I created a fresh project, with nothing else going on. Still lost the audio :\

Thanks for the heads up, I'll try that road. If it doesn't work, what do you recommend converting the files to?

If you have tried rendering it and it did not help, then you are most likely missing a codec required to play the audio back. Have you tried exporting the video out of the editing software? It may just not be playing back in the editor to save ram space.

Honestly it's more about what works. There is a software called Free AVI Converter that I use, it is free and quite snappy. It has a series of different formats to choose from and whenever I've had codec issues in the past I would just go down the list until I found one that worked. Typically .mov would work for me.

Also is this something new that started happening? Or did you just get a new software or new camera?

Seems weird that it would arbitrarily happen with some clips, and not others. Especially when I'll have a 30m working clip and a 4m long one that loses the audio. I'm looking into codecs now, though.

It's been happening for the least month, pretty steadily. Getting more and more frustrated. Thanks for the format suggestions!

Well let me know how things go. If coverting doesn't help let me know and I can try troubleshooting you further.

Well, I've given up on codecs being the answer, and moved on to converting. I decided to try .avi, instead of .mp4, since that's still in the same family as .m2ts files.

It took way longer to convert a 3 and half minute clip than I expected. Like 15m. And it cut the file size down to 1/3, which I assume will hit my quality pretty solidly. And then the rendering was a million times slower :\ Practically unworkably so.

Any advice on a lossless/mostly lossless format to try over .avi?

I wouldn't recommend AVI. It's too bulky and slow. Idk what coverter you're using but it shouldn't be compressing, just converting. The one that I have has a lossless conversion option. Try out freeaviconverter and see how that works.
