Help improving my audio quality

Hi everyone,

My audio quality is not terrible, but it could definitely be better. Maybe someone can help drop a little bit of knowledge on me, since the world of equipment can be very confusing!

Originally, I was using a cheap lav mic that plugged into my phone. Then I would download the that audio to my computer, and line it up with my video clips on iMovie. This process took FOREVER. So I opted for a lav mic with a 20ft cable, which plugs directly into my Cannon 60D. This has drastically sped up my editing process because I no longer have to line up the audio with the video, but the sound quality is not great. There's a bit of a hiss, and it gets even worse when I raise my voice, or increase the volume.

I assume my problem is both a cheap microphone, but also that the Cannon is just not built for recording high quality audio, and I might need more (or different) equipment to improve the quality. Someone mentioned at one point on this forum that some acoustic panels might help the sound quality as well, but I have a feeling that's not really the root of the issue.

Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

I've had two Canons and back ground hiss was a big issue.

Switched to a Nikon L820 because of this and no hiss at all. But the Nikon can over modulate at times so nothing is perfect.

The hiss you are getting will be good ol Canon hiss that's a total pain in the butt. Can't be fixed.

I believe some later model Canons are much better regarding this.
