Has YouTube's new format killed the comment section?

I know we've all probably complained about the Google + integration at some point or how the comments at the top of videos are automatically from "popular people".

But I've also noticed that the new format is killing any discussion in the videos of smaller YouTubers. There are probably a lot of factors for this, but it's seems to be getting harder and harder for smaller channels to engage with an audience.

Personally, I've always floated around 100 subscribers, and had a couple of commenters to chat with in my videos. It hasn't been until the last year that I consistently post videos that get 0 comments. Im not doing anything differently (that I know of.)

Any tips to bring back discussion in the comments section? Let me know.

I dont know if this is true or not but it seems like adblocker will block comments and will make it broken. There is a way to use the comments, it would seem like third party programs like windows 8 youtube app, seems to work fine. Another way is by using the phone but no one does it because the ads will show.

I personally had a big blow in comments immediately after the G+ integration, but now I have more comments than ever from the new format.

The comments on my second channel had a huge increase and the comments on my main decreased for some reason

I haven't had any issues with it so far. Maybe in your videos as your subscribers to leave a comment. I watched your last video On Seasons and Londons, perhaps at the end of a vlog like that ask to leave a comment about what their favorite season is or something like that to get the conversation going. Also, subscribed to you! Your vlogs remind me a lot of my best friend. lol
