Has anyone tried to upload Scenarist Closed Captions (SCC) on YouTube recently?

Hi all,

I made a thread a while back about uploading Scenarist Closed Captions (SCC) to YouTube. I have it working for "Pop-on" and "Paint-on" display modes but couldn't get the "Roll-up" display mode working. Can someone please confirm if "roll-up" captions still work? When I published my "roll-up" captions they would be reformatted as standard YouTube captions and "pop-on" which is not I want. Thanks in advance,

I've had the same problem. I've tinkered with my SCC file a fair amount and just can't get them to do roll-up.

However, I have uploaded a video that contained embedded roll-up captions, and YouTube detected them and extracted them, and those DID do roll-up! So they have the capability, but there seems to be a problem with the uploader.

I have even downloaded the roll-up captions that YouTube converted and were working and tried uploading them again, and the uploaded version did not roll-up, as we both have seen. They act just like all my other attempts.

Hopefully they will fix it in the future.

Hi GregH,
nice to know that you got the embedded roll-up captions working, do you mind sharing which format your uploaded video used?
I'm guessing it's one of those NTSC SD formats that can embed closed captioning but not too sure how well YouTube deals with them.
Thanks for sharing.

They were MPEG files that came from DVD VOB files originally. They are TV show videos sent to me by the video production company I work with. I can use ccextractor to extract the captions into an SCC file and I've done that, but YouTube also extracted them as captions labeled "cc1 - English." I was surprised to find captions in the file. Most of the DVDs I get from them don't, but a few do. I don't know how that works. These are video DVDs that I convert from the VOB files into MPEG files using MPEG Streamclip.

I had thought that I had gotten roll-up SCC captions to upload in the past (like a few years ago), but I don't remember the specifics. Maybe they broke their import or maybe I'm mistaken. But the YouTube display code seems to support it even if their importer doesn't. So that's good news for the future.

I've tried making a very simple SCC roll-up and done lots tinkering but they just don't work. Like I said, I even downloaded the "cc1" caption file that does do rollups from YouTube and tried uploading that same file back and that didn't work either. So something with their importer just doesn't work.

Anyway, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one also.

I was wondering why there were captions on some videos labeled as "cc1 - English", all the captions I've uploaded - even working didn't have "cc1",
that explains it, thanks again for your help.

EDIT: I tried uploading MPGs embedded with roll-up closed captioning to YouTube and it worked, save for some errors that YouTube sometimes did not detect the characters at the end of captions, might need to put some redundancy information in.
