Graphics/Photo Editing software for iMac

I have recently jumped ship from PC to Mac.

I could use some assistance.

What is a good (free) program for editing photos and graphics on the iMac?

Desperately needing something to make some channel art.

Or at least try.

I'm not a Mac User, but Adobe Photoshop is what I use on Windows for image editing; Sony Vegas Pro 12 for Video Editing which is basically like Final Cut Pro on Mac.
