Goals and Youtube Algorithms

Posting Mad!
I see a lot of posts on how to get more views, subscribers, make a better channel, but for as much time that I have been putting into my channel I've spent quite a bit of it looking at the numbers. I ran across a "phenomenon" the other day that was quite interesting.

Until this point I can account for virtually every view I have had on my channel. I don't mean I know every person but I can track it back to something I did to generate views. The remainder of the views are generally from people who search for the specific subjects that my videos cover. That was until last Monday.

Last Monday subscribers started coming in like mad (for me). In my case I get a new subscriber every 40-100 views. At the rate they were coming in I knew something was up but I couldn't figure out what. It turns out that the views were coming from something YouTube did. They had featured my latest video somewhere (still don't know where).

After everything had settled down and the smoke had cleared I began to look at the numbers like I always do to figure out how to re-create the phenomenon. I came up with a theory. In this particular video I was able to generate 2000+ views within 24 hours. I figure there must be a break point somewhere that YouTube decides, "hey, this video is going places, we better give it more exposure" and they feature it in some fashion. I ended up with 20,000 views on that video in 24 hours.

Here is my question to all of you- Have you ever seen someone with much more experience than I do a write-up of how YouTube algorithms work and what are the prerequisites to get to this elevated status?

I'd love for that to happen to me, I have received some spike in views in a few of my vids but never to the extent that you just said. It's good to know YouTube realises when there's good content or a popular vid

Just realised I didn't answer you question, but meh :P

If there is an algorithm out there like this the point is you can MAKE it happen. It might be easier for a non-gaming channel to do it but it can be done nonetheless. The first thing that you need to know about Youtube is that uploading videos with the perfect title, tags, thumbnail, etc will get you NOTHING...upfront. Everyday I do this it becomes more and more evident that YOU are in charge of your own destiny on YouTube. You have to use other forms of social media, forums, websites to drive your views when starting out. It's lots of hard work and you have to have thick skin, drive, goals, and a detailed plan to achieve those goals. Subscribers don't matter much until you reach the point of what I call "critical mass". Maybe 10% of subs watch your videos right away. If 2000 views in 24 hours is the ticket to getting an elevated status by being featured then you need 20,000 subs.

With YouTube's switch to favoring videos by the "minutes watched" over just views I believe the next step is getting folks to watch as much of the video as possible. I haven't gotten far enough to figure this next part out.

To me, YouTube directly emulates the model for success in life. Nothing but hard, dedicated work with maybe a pinch of luck thrown into the mix.

I actually really enjoyed reading this for some off reason. It gave me a sense of "drive" that you are talking about. The you make your own destiny on YouTube is a great motivator. If you really think about it, people that are successful in life are the ones that did everything and anything to become better. This is what I am thinking YouTube should be treated like. People might think that advertising your YouTube channel is unethical, but it is also a very huge advertising technique that will help a lot.

lol. That's like one hell of a chance for YouTube to feature your video...there's like millions of users right now or billions.:D

I think you missed the entire point of the thread. I am saying that nothing happens on YouTube by chance. Why would it? A crappy video with 6 views is NEVER going to featured on YT. Why would they do it? It isn't going to keep people coming back. It won't sell advertising. They absolutely DO have algorithms that elevate videos that are getting organic attention. What I am trying to say is that I can loosely define this algorithm by the performance of my video and I am asking if anyone out there can tighten up my definition.[DOUBLEPOST=1368888998,1368888887][/DOUBLEPOST]
This was a great topic and I would like to know the reason behind your brief and sudden success.
Well, the reason is I was able to drive 2000+ people to watch my video in a short time period. Whether comments, likes or anything had something to do with it I don't know. The only data I have to work with is the 2,000 views in 24 hours.

Nice job on reaching 24k+ views, congratulations man! :) As far as search algorithms, I'm not exactly sure of which algorithms are used, but from what I heard is that it always changes, so what once worked years ago, probably doesn't work in the future..
