Gimmicks

A lot of the big name youtubers seem to have a gimmick. Ray William Johnson is a pervy frat boy that reviews viral videos, Niga Higa is an Asian that does comedy and has that silly 'teehee' sign off, Boogie has his Francis character, and so on.

Are gimmicks necessary to make it big on youtube?
Do you have a gimmick?
Do they really bring in the views? If so, what kind of gimmick should I adopt? I already try to open all my videos with the 'friends and fiends' line.

I don't think that any of those things you listed are really gimmicks, they're just descriptions of what they are. For example, I'm a white nerdy guy who talks about the thoughts he has. I don't really get what makes those things gimmicks.

I get that, but I don't think those are outstanding qualities, like Ray looking like a "frat guy" or Nigahiga being an Asian funny guy. I don't believe those are essential parts of what they do.

But that's how people identify them. That is what I mean by a gimmick. Some kind of identifier that people can go off of that makes them remember the person.

I don't think so. I know people who watch both of them, but they don't identify them by either of the descriptions you gave. For most people, they're just a funny person who entertains them. I don't hera people talk about Nigahiga as the "asian guy", just someone that they watch. If that's a major driving factor behind YouTube, it's something that, for one reason or another, I have not encountered.

Well, we must be talking to different people then. I'm sorry if you are offended by this, you seem very out to debate about it when that is not the reason I made this thread.

What I'm trying to determine is what I'm not doing to set myself apart from everyone and if I should adopt a character or play into some part of myself I normally don't even think about.
