Gaming setup advice

Hey there, I wasn't sure where to put this.

I've decided that I want to try being a youtube gaming channel, I've ordered most of the equipment(gaming monitor, capture card, mic, headset). The thing I wanted advice on was the whole editing side. I see that the people that use monitors tend to use two, one for gaming and the other being a desktop used for editing. I'm wondering do I have to get a desktop or a mac for editing or would I be able to do that on my laptop it's an Asus, Intel core i5, 750 gig HDD and 4 gig RAM.

Doesn't really matter what you want to use to edit, it's entirely up to you. Generally you should have 3 monitors, because of the line in the middle (if you want to be picky about graphics and size and how it will shape out). Unless you have money to splash I wouldn't buy it all, as you might not even get far in the YouTube world, unless you work your socks off for it.

Thanks guys so it doesn't really matter what I use for editing, Shiftkin, what did you mean by line in the middle? Sorry new to all this. I'm not really that picky on size and that. I do plan on putting a lot of time and effort into this. I was planning on torrenting Sony Vegas actually Mowkus seems most people recommend it. I appreciate your help, just want to make sure I've got everything I need sorted.

Alright. Few things.

What are you planning on recording? Console or PC games? Depending on which you pick, there's different setups for either. For example, if you're recording Console games, you only need your computer monitor, and your television monitor. Obviously just to make sure things are being recorded and that there's no technical errors.

If your plan was to record your PC, you only need some capture software. Such as OBS, or Dxtory and other programs of the sorts. Perhaps a program to capture your voice as well. Such as Audacity.

Now, I know you can technically capture PC gameplay through an ElGato by running your HDMI cable through it and back into your monitor. If that's the case you'll need a second PC and or laptop to capture the footage. Otherwise your main rig will have quite the load to carry.

In terms of editing. You don't need to get a new computer for it. Just get the software. There's lots of freeware out there. Though if I had to recommend a program for windows; It'd be Adobe Premiere.

There's plenty of tutorials for people starting to do Let's Plays and the sort. I would recommend looking some up. YouTube tutorials are your friend.

Would take this advice, I'm in a similar situation to yourself and just starting out down the YouTube road and whilst I have made plans about how I want the setup to be eventually, it's a gradual process and my general rule of thumb is to progress your equipment as your viewership, subs etc. increases. It takes a lot of work (and luck) to make it in the ever more saturated YouTube environment so as far as equipment goes just take it slowly (for instance I've been doing it a few months now and only thing I've bought is a capture device, if it keeps progressing in a few weeks or month I'll then buy another piece of 'kit') and enjoy the ride.

3 monitors is not needed. I don't know a single person in the professional world with 3 basic computer monitors. If anything they have 2 monitors, 1 with a full 1080p preview and the other with their bins and timelines for editing. If they have a third it will be a more expensive colour correct monitor. Personally I hardly ever use my second while editing.

YouTubers always seem to go over the top with these things.

@Super it's console gaming that I'll be doing, I bought the monitor so I could play and record in my room as opposed to the busy living room. @Fudgy I just wanted to get everything off the bat really as I'm taking it relatively seriously, good luck with your channel btw, and Andrew I thought 3 was a bit excessive, my main concern was whether my laptop could handle editing and rendering or if I'd have to get a desktop and obviously a monitor with that.

Your laptop should be fine for editing. I doubt you will be able to use it for anything else while it renders, but it should be fine.

Basically, look at your current setup and decide what you "actually" need, if its PC footage your doing, just download some software to capture stuff, if its Console, go get a external capture card. I do Fifa videos and PSN videos and my setup it basically my pc, which I connect to a aVermedia capture card which connects to my Ps4.

I then whack everything into Premiere and let the magic happen. Your setup doesnt need to be flashy or expensive but you do need some basic stuff whether its software for pc footage or hardware for console. Its suppose to be fun, not bankrupt you.

hope that helps :)

This man speaks the truth.
And if he needs a capture card, I happen to have one for sale ;) (shameless self promotion).
