i don't know if its too obvious to say, but windows movie maker is pretty good, as long as you don't want slo mo or picture in picture, or anything too fancy - for simple editing, it gets the job done
Well there is always Blender. It is very powerful but has an awkward interface. However, if you want one of the best 3d animation softwares out there you can get 3ds Max. It's about 3500 dollars but if you are a student all you have to do is say where you go to school and you can download it for free.
