For all the musicians

Hey you guys,

So for all the guitar players out there! I wanted to know how you guys record your guitar plays along with the camera. Right now I own a really HD camera and a studio microphone. But I don't really have a clue how to record everything and sync everything.

Any suggestions ?

If you record the audio and video at the same time, then you just have to sync the 2 tracks in your editing software, simple as that. :) However if you want to have multiple shots (or film outside/at a better location) then you have to record the audio and video seperately and again, sync all the tracks in your editing program, that's the way I do it. Not a really hard thing to do though, just use your ears and it'll be fine. :)

Thanks Peter, you're a legend!

For all my covers I record the audio and video together and then sync them up, but for my original I recorded the audio first then the video. The problem with this is that you have to play exactly the same notes in time with the music otherwise it looks terrible. Hope this helps.

I just record directly into Garageband either through Guitar Rig 5 or using my amp mic'd with an SM57. At the moment I am recording the audio and video separately however, as Scotty_Gunning said, it's difficult to play the exact same thing and I often find myself adding slides in the video where they don't exist in the audio. It's pretty difficult to remember exactly how you played it especially for more complex songs.

I would recommend just recording the audio and video at the same time if you can, and then just sync them up later on. In regards to that, it's quite useful to do a single strum while muting the strings as it makes syncing perfectly a lot easier. Obviously you should cut that bit out once it's synced.
