floor 3 way lamp or desk lamp for home lighting set up?

What do you guys think of using a 3 way floor lamp with fluorescent light aimed at you for lighting? I am talking about those floor lamps with 3 bulbs that you can point in every which direction all aimed at me... or better to use a desk lamp with a fluorescent light aimed at me?
 
I really like the lighting in the hodgetwin's videos... it looks like it's natural light but does it look like they are using a softbox as well or does it look like only natural light?
