Field dominance? FCP and Premiere tip.

Hey!
I was talking to a fellow editor the other day and they asked why their exported videos had a weird interlacing issue. I have dealt with this, and it was so annoying until I figured it out.
See the images on this page for an example of the "interlacing artifacts": http://neuron2.net/LVG/interlacing.html

It is most noticeable with motion graphics, like titles etc.

This tearing during motion comes from what is called "field dominance".

Any television that is older is interlaced, so basically every other line is filled in from top to bottom skipping every other line. Then the missing lines are filled in from top to bottom.
(Here is a good explanation: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26010?viewlocale=en_us&locale=en_us )

With the invention of progressive scan this is no longer needed. Also, this is not needed for videos on the internet.

If you are editing with Final Cut Pro or Premiere, the easiest way to make sure you are not going to have this issue is to use a progressive scan preset (1080p/720p).

But you can also disable the field dominance in the settings. It should look like "Upper/Even","Lower/Odd", "None". The "None" setting will clean up your video.

Hope this helps!

Let me know if you have any questions!
