I'd recommend a look at the TED talk titled "The manipulative tricks tech companies use to capture your attention".

I had not realized the degree to which our attention spans are manipulated. There's actually conscious design to propagate the viewer through a sequence of videos that will result in the greatest watch time and the viewer hence staying on Yt the longest. Of course I realise the algo is made to do this, but the way the presenter said it's currently done, it's borderline manipulative.
It goes back to what @chottom mentioned a while back and stimulating the emotional centres of the brain with videos as a way to get people hooked.
The presenter also mentioned his work at the Stanford Persuasive Tech Lab. That will make for interesting reading the rest of the weekend.
