Fair Use Question

Do any of you guys know about fair use or a cheap and effective way of finding out about it?

Quite a few of my videos have the proceeds going to a copyright owner but I thought I was covered by fair use. I'm too scared to appeal against this though in case my channel receives a strike.

Really appreciate your advice :)

Thanks

Search Fair Use in the YouTube Help section. There is a link to YouTube Help at the bottom of every page on YouTube's site. Looking at your content I can see why you have claims; but if these are legit reviews, Fair Use might be on your side here.

By looking at your channel, your videos are all about reviews and they do comply with FAIR use laws, so don't worry about that, you can dispute for fair use. Some images may subjected to be copyrighted, so make sure that you don't use those images frequently.

Here is YouTube's FAQ on fair use, I don't think there is a short cut to understanding it quickly. Fair use for the digital world even in US law is not even properly defined IMHO. The more you read about fair use and different scenarios that have happened on the internet then the more educated you become. Court cases that have happened over fair use are also all different. Also here is the US law (section 107) on them if you want a good read. YouTube as a website uses US law for its guidelines but really doesn't honour it as of late ><. Just remember anyone can claim your video but you have to make sure you can refute with a good defence so understanding these things are key especially so if your channel uses copyright content but you feel that you fall under fair use or believe that you do, you have to be prepared to refute with a good defence. Reaction channels are very different to actual reviews and critiques as you use a lot of copyright content and focus on genuine reactions rather than focusing on a script and discussing the copyright content in detail bit by bit with an informative approach. You have to be able to prove that your content is indeed transformative, original and providing something other than just view grabbing by using the copyright content. That's why understanding fair use is an ongoing experience as it is likely to change especially on YouTube in the coming years.

YouTube actually offers a lot of information on fair usage on their own site. I simple Google search for "YouTube fair usage" will present many great articles :)
