Fair use Etiquette

I'm planning on launching my new youtube channel pretty soon, it's going to be about video game related stuff.

Anyway, I am curious as to the etiquette and fair use of borrowing short clips of other youtube channels. For example if I made a movie review that borrowed footage from a trailer would it be necessary to provide a link to it. Or if I took a short clip from a let's play, would I need permission from the uploader beforehand.

That depends. It's good practice to ask anyway. You are only safe if you have a written and signed broadcast permission.

What exactly do you mean by safe? Are there any dangers to using content without their permission?

Technically they or their network would come after you and have the video taken down. Quite unlikely I think, but still just good manners to ask to be able to use some parts. I'd assume many would allow it, given that you either give a link back or at least mention then original source in the video itself.

Thanks for the replies.

If I did use content that wasn't mine I'd be sure to make it clear the viewers and definitely give a link and shout out to the creator.
Also what would be the best way of contacting the creator/uploader?

The best way is the media that the uploader uses most. Usually the contact data is given on the channel page.

Anytime you are using content that isn't your always cover your bases and ask. You never want to be on the wrong end of a copyright claim. That can have serious consequences on your channel.
