Face Cam Let's Play

Hey,

One thing I've always wondered is how do you record and edit together a PC let's play with face cam. I never understood how you could get the facecam perfectly sync'd with the gameplay. Do you have to start each at the exact same time maybe give yourself a signal as to when to insert the gameplay footage?

Also what's the basic setup require? looking into having one just for a little bit of fun. Any devices out there that are cheap for PC gaming recording? Any that can double as PC and Xbox/ps3? Thanks. Cheaper options first.

You can do a signal, or you can just tell by the reactions, or of course you can record audio from both sources, sync the audio then mute the camera, all viable options.

For the first half, since I play with my lights off, I just line up any lighting changes from the game with the reflection off of my face. It isn't terribly difficult to do.

Second half, just have a webcam or a handcam and record yourself. I won't go into specifics since it's a preference thing; just go on Amazon and look up a few products.

I use fraps and windows movie maker. I turn on webcam on wmm and then count down and hit record with fraps, its some what effective. However, You can use a program called xsplit, its a streaming software, paying 15$ every 3 months you can use that program and its 100% better.

Ok but what about hardware to record the PC game.I tried without hardware and just my computer and even with 8gb of ram and a decent CPU as soon as I turned FRAPS on the game Framerate slowed down real bad so it's not like anyone would wanna watch that. plus you can't play properly. Also what software's easiest for recording the PC and then which one's best and easiest for putting it all together.

I've got a camera so I'll use that for the face.

Microphone, headphone? Thinking the camera's audio will be semi-decent as long as I;ve got some headphones plugged in

You're asking a bunch of preference based things, to be honest. Besides Fraps, there's a plethora of options to use to record PC gameplay. To list a few, there's Dxtory, Action, Playclaw, Bandicam, and several more. Fraps is more harddrive intensive than anything else since it writes directly onto your harddrive, whereas others (Dxtory for example) may be more CPU based.

There's no real "easiest" for recording the PC. What would be easiest is what works the best for your set up. I use Fraps and Action, personally.

Putting it all together is based on the editing program, not the recording program. Sony Vegas Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro are the two most common top-tier editors.

Don't skimp on microphone. Headphones can be whatever, but a decent microphone can be the difference between views and no views. Use Audacity if your audio still isn't up to par with what sounds good.

My personal set up: I use either Fraps or Action to record games, I have a Logitech webcam and use the provided software to record facecam, I use Audacity to record my vocals. When finished, I tweak my levels in Audacity, then throw the gameplay, webcam and audio into Sony Vegas Pro 12. I edit, render, then ta-da.

you're getting 1080p with a smooth framerate. I tried this a few months back and when I started using fraps it slowed down hardout. Do you have any specific hardware or is it just your computer? I've got an i5-3470 with 8gb ram 64-bit windows 7

Any recommendations on the cheapest but no views lost microphone.

You can synchronise the facecam and the gameplay recording thanks to the game's start menu. I do it that way most of the time: you're in the menu and when your mouse goes on something like "New game", "Continue", "Options", say it out loud. I also say "click" when I click on something which is good for sync because my microphone records my mouse's sounds.

Like I said, Fraps is very harddrive intensive. Check your harddrive write speeds; that may be what slows you down the most. Obviously, CPU and Graphics Card will contribute as well, but if you're only using one harddrive to play AND record, Fraps will strain. If you have low write speeds on your harddrive, Fraps will strain. So on.

Look up Audio Technica and Yeti microphones. Those are pretty standard to use and range anywhere from 50 to 150 USD for a serviceable one.
