Doing a Historical Video..What can I use?

Posting Mad!
I am putting together a historical video on a subject and was wondering what pictures, video, sound, etc can I use from other sources. I guess my question is similar to using royalty free music. What sources can I use for historical video footage and pictures? Is there somewhere on the web I can get royalty free pictures and video? I'm talking like World War II reels and things like that. How do you attribute the sources? My intention is to monetize the video (I'll do it without the footage if it isn't possible to include it).

You might find some of that stuff on archive . Org. It's poorly organised but has lotsa stuff. Always check the licence of what you download, look for CC (creative commons) licence. Some clips might need only a mention of the creator in your credits for full commercial use. Historical public access clips are easier to get than most stuff out there. :D good luck!

Best best answer you could get :)

Question, so if it doesn't list a CC license, stay away from it? Or is everything on the archives fall under a certain CC license?

Well it's supposed to be a public access server so that may be the case, but as a general rule on any site anywhere, always better to check. You're trying to do things right, so it'd suck to get in some dispute accidentally. :)

Hi, I come up across this issue alot while doing my videos. From my experience, the best possible way to acquire historical pictures is through wikimedia commons. Their library is vast and it's mostly public domain stuff. For history related pictures, they are almost always public domain as the copyright on them has expired.

Sometimes I can't find what I need, so I do some image searches about the subject and look for stuff that looks old. I download that image and run it through google reverse image search to find out where it originated from. If it's from a private institution, I avoid it, if It's from a US government institution, I investigate whether I can use it or not before using it in the video. In most cases, it should be fine.

Hope this helps
