Does ram help quicker renders?

Hey guys,

So i have a not so good computer, but i don't game on it so i don't need high specs, just need it for social sites and watching videos and rendering really. But what i want to know does having more ram essentially help decrease the overall rendering speed at all?

Yes, however which type of ram factors in a whole lot more than you would think.

Try searching up a simple guide on RAM, or memory.

It is not the only factor, a good ssd can tremendously help with render times, and your GPU also contributes.
 
More RAM = more memory usage for your editing/render program :) The GPU is probably the most influential though.
 
RAM is just one of the three major components for rendering :)
a good processor can reduce rendering times a little bit
GPU's (especially nvidias) are very good for rendering if you use Sony Vegas CUDA cores are enabled on Sony Vegas which really reduces render times
Also faster RAM does help but I don't know how much :)

I just learned about using CUDA, and it REALLY helped rendering times o.o

Just a reminder, only (x)70 or higher have CUDA support. At least from what I recall, unless the 760s have CUDA I haven't looked for that yet. Although I renamed the CUDA file on premiere and videos with watermarks that took me 7hrs (literally) to export now take an average of 20-60mins depending on the length of the video and how much text/effects I've added. This is on a 660Ti with 8gb. Not a bad performance increase for just renaming a file xD
 
RAM will help WHILE YOU EDIT. It will make the editing and project creation process smoother since the program can call on the quick access memory when it needs to it.

RAM doesn't help too much when rendering the final project though. This is CPU INTENSIVE. The faster your CPU the faster you render. RAM doesn't help here very much since RAM does not compute, it simply stores data temporarily. Its the CPU that actually computes and renders the project.

Many newer editors (like Sony Vegas) can now also use the processor on high end graphics cards in order to take the load off of the CPU - although the editors that do this are as yet limited.

In essence:
RAM helps while editing.
A fast HDD or SSD helps while editing.
Both of these are for data storage - not for computational use. They make data transfer faster, which helps while editing.

CPU helps with rendering.
GPU helps with rendering.
Both of these actually 'work' rather then store data. They are responsible for the calculations that go into the rendering.
