Do You Use an External Audio Recorder? (Zoom H6 etc.)

Ahoy! I'm wondering if anyone here uses external audio recorders, such as the zoom h6 or those box looking devices that have audio settings and that.

What are your experiences with them? Do you gain anything with it? I've never used one of these but I have a pretty good mic that plugs into my camera, as so do some people do too yet use an external recorder, what do you gain with this? If you can give a brief explanation that would be helpful :)

I don't yet, but the good about them is:
More inputs, XLR and such, better preamps (the ones built into a DSLR are pretty bad) as well as having a good onboard mic and good recording options. They will increase your audio by quite a lot.

Depending on what you want to do, If you want to use XLR mics I'd go with the Zoom H4N or Tascam DR-40 (or even the DR60D). If all you use is the audio jack, a Zoom H1 would work fine (and be a lot cheaper).
Depends how much you want to spend :p[DOUBLEPOST=1389741178,1389741135][/DOUBLEPOST]
Yeah I use a h4n, it means I can get wired up and film pranks from afar
What do you use with the h4n?

I have the H6, but I only use it when audio is critical-like concerts/live music performances when audio is critical. For most of the stuff I shoot, a Rode Videomic or Shure VP83 (I have both) does an adequate job.

For concerts, having an external recorder is essential. The mic modules on the H6 are of better quality than most camera mounted shotgun mics, it's able to record in stereo, and it has a backup record function that records a second audio track simultaneously at -12db so the audio won't get blown out.

ah ok that makes more sense now :p I was planning on getting and XLR mic then the external recorder, it's for short films so the audio is super cinematic :)[DOUBLEPOST=1389741362][/DOUBLEPOST]

I think you've sucked me in to wanting to buy one right now :p

How much do you want to spend? That's the big question :p

Nope. I use a Rode VMP on my DSLR. But if I did, I would get an H4N :)
