Do you speak English? No, really.

Sabrina

I'm going outside now.
I've written a couple of scripts in English, which is unfortunately not my mother tongue, and I need some help with a few words/lines. I don't have anyone else I can ask... :help:

  1. I'm looking for the name of the place where wastewater is filtered (sorry for the mental image! :laugh2:) The dictionary is giving me many options so how would you call it?

  2. On a junkyard (or I guess I should say scrapyard when leaning towards British English?), what is the device called that compacts the old cars? You know, the one that people get murdered in. :sneaky2:

  3. Where do people commonly go shopping and, among other things, buy cleaning products? Is that a supermarket? Or just store? Or..? And what would the salesperson be called? Salesperson? :DAssistant? Clerk? Argh. I mean the person you walk up to and ask where the tampons are (or maybe not).

  4. This is supposed to be the first line, explaining the situation, but I'm very unsure whether it's correct:
Therapist: "What is it that made you seek couple's counseling?"

Any help is much appreciated!

Water Treatment Plant
Compactor
Market

Your therapist's first line is proper and grammatically correct, as far as I know.

Water treatment plant, compactor, I just call it a store (although I guess it varies), I call them assistants (again, might vary), and that sentence seems grammatically correct.

Most things have been answered already, but I'll add some input.

For the name of salesperson, anything you listed is fine. If you're going for a specific dialect, it might be more worth it to be specific, otherwise not really.
Your therapist line is fine, I'd just add a "So, tell me," to the beginning to the line. Seems more like what I've seen.

And for the record. your English is fantastic. :)

Thank you so much! :thumbsup2: You guys are amazing. (And so much better than a dictionary. Can I have you as mini versions to carry around with me?)

Hm, other than British English, I have no idea. But the person mentioning the salesperson is a bit more posh, if that helps...

Ha, you're right, that seems to be the classic opening line.

Thank you. So all those years watching TV shows in English were not wasted after all. :D

Well, even if the person is a bit posh, I don't see why he wouldn't refer to someone as a salesperson.

You're welcome! Learning from the actual media is super great! It really helps to improve your conversation skills.

Best of luck :)
