Do You Really Need a Network?

I've asked myself this many times but have little knowledge about what a network can offer you in comparison to being a solo partner on YouTube...

If someone could enlighten me on the topic that'll be great :)

I personally don't think networks help too much. You can make money off your videos without a network.

But should join a network if:
1. You need to get paid in paypal (google doesn't pay via paypal) If you don't have a bank account you might have to join a network so you can get paid.
2. You really want good royalty free music and don't know where to go. Networks provide a library of royalty free music for you to use. If you weren't in a network you might have to pay for the music or find music somewhere on the web.
3. You want a better dashboard. Networks give their users a dashboard that is usually more in depth then the normal dashboard. However, for really small channels, I don't know if that matters.
4. You trouble with YouTube a lot, whether it be copyright, or not knowing how to upload or anything in-between. If you are having a lot of problems, you might to join a network. Networks have dedicated support teams that can help you if you need it.
5. You have potential of things off YouTube. This is exclusively for bigger channels but you prove yourself, networks can get you a manager, tv appearances, brand deals, and more.

You have to be okay with giving a % of your money of any of the features above.
Should you join a network? Take this simple two question test to find out:
1. Is there anything in list 1-5 that I really want/need?
If no, don't join a network
If yes, move to question 2
2. Would you be willing to give up 10-40% of your money in exchange for the feature(s) above?
If no, don't join a network
If yes, join a network
If maybe, do some research on networks think about it some more.

I joined Fullscreen because I heard it had cool features such as Gorilla campaigns.
Though I rarely hear about new campaigns I still like the network for their music libraries and the discounts etc. The people over there are really nice and the staff answers your questions or helps you with your problems.
There's also a feature called groups.
I'm member of the comedy group, it's really nice because it has a promote option that puts your video in a group playlist on other people's channels. It also posts comedy videos on the group playlist on your own channel though.
I like the Network.
But most of these can also be done without a Network, it requires some more work and contact but you'll be able to get most of those features eventually.

I personally think that joining a network doesn't have any substantial benefits as such but then that is my opinion and there might be others who have managed to grow whilst tied to a network.

This is a great post, and I agree with you totally!
None of those features are particularly beneficial for me, which is why I choose to use the Youtube partnership program and nothing else.

Being paid through Paypal and having no dealings with Google Adsense directly is something I'll gladly pay 10% of my earnings for. I use my Adsense account for many other websites and have no interest in risking getting banned from it by some bogus YouTube claim. As a self-monetized channel you're just more vulnerable to that king of stuff and YouTube (and Adsense) unfortunately have a reputation of shutting you down for no apparent reason and without any sort of discussion. As such I choose to keep the two strictly separate. So if one goes down, it won't drag the other down with it.

Not that I'm expecting them to go down, I try to adhere by the rules as much as possible on both platforms. But b******t has happened in the past with other people and it will no doubt continue to happen.

In my particular case, being part of the network has a huge advantage. It doesn't matter with who I'm partnered with, but what it matters is that YouTube was giving me a headache with the fact that I wanted to monetize my videos immediately (crucial for the stuff I upload) and half of them wouldn't be approved for monetization and despite my best efforts to prove that I am allowed to upload the content (mind you, I don't have a personal, written permission, but it is written on company website), majority of videos would still end up not being monetized. After joining a network, I had no such problems ever again - I can monetize all content I upload right away and start making money from first non-adblocked viewer!

All the other things don't matter much to me, since a channel with 10k+ subscribers/~600k monthly views can't get any major promotion in a network that has far bigger channels under their belt and would obviously prioritize those. A common mistake new YouTubers make is that they think if they join a network, they'll magically gain bunch of subscribers and views. It goes as far that they use networks forums only to promote themselves and annoy other partners because they think someone will be interested in their crappy content. I simply wish networks would increase their requirements, as most networks will take almost anyone in (in one hand, it makes sense for networks, considering you can't know whether someone will become popular and if someone will not). So to anyone out there reading this, if you're still not partnered and are looking for a network with a small channel - don't just do it because you can. And if you have a bigger channel, don't agree to anything less than 90/10 split - if network has lower rev share, contact them and negotiate a better deal for yourself (same goes for contract length).

If you're already investing some time into your videos, make sure to invest enough time to get yourself the best deal possible! ;)
