Death by Thinking

Sopada

I've Got It
Have y'all ever had this issue?

You come up with all this amazing idea for a video. You start building it up to this magnificent thing. You spent a good hour into developing it into this solid idea.

SUDDENLY

The thought fades, and this magnificent idea breaks into another idea, and into another and so on and so on . Then all of a sudden it's past midnight and all you have to show for it is a bunch of ideas you know will probably never see the light of day.

>Repeat process for an eternity

Yes, this happens to a lot of content creators including myself. Either I am about to make something and I have second thoughts about it or I have uploaded something and It doesn't feel like an accomplishment. For me I get depressed too easy stuck on ideas and having things run around my head all day. I'm not a unsociable person so just being at home alone for more than a week really annoys my mood. Maybe am bipolar I dunno lol but I'm kinda learning to move on from things a lot more, just accept my work and go for my ideas instead of letting it change for the worse and having to deal with that.

Do you ever write ideas down? I usually find that if you write stuff down as your thought process flows, then at least the next day, with a fresh head on, you can look back at it and be like "oh- well this bit is still a good idea".

From what I have heard from professional writers and comedians, the writing process is usually an endless cycle of creative splurge followed by going back through it- chucking out most of it, rewriting, creative splurge... repeat till you run out of time and frantically throw what you have together.

I guess with YT alot of the time I am tempted to pull it all together in the editing process though as it can be hard to know exactly what will work and a what won't in the planning/scripting stage.

I did this a lot. That's why this year I'm trying to upload weekly until I run out of steam, it has forced me to grab an idea and work with it quickly before I lose it. It is amazing how easily time flies and you got nothing to show for it.

Feeling your pain!

That sounds really interesting to challenge yourself to something like that, do you mind if I ask how you think its going? Our videos are quite long and take a lot of time to put together and since we both work full time we recently had to accept that our ideal of a video every two weeks has become unrealistic.

I want to maybe branch out with some shorter videos that we can put out maybe once a week inbetween "main" videos but like you said, its pulling the ideas together in time for the schedule and also the ideas need to be something that can be completed in a short amount of time but we don't want to compromise on quality.

So far so good. Did some easy quick vids when I was stuck, but It has forced me to be ruthless and not be a perfectionist.

you have to try not to obsess about things that only you would probably notice.

Once you can do that it becomes a little more manageable.

That's what I am going to try to do this year actually! If for some reason I can't flush one out ever week then every two weeks is fine too.

Right now though, I'm just trying to get that one big push to get me out of the planning phase and into the create phase.

I like your method! I also find myself stuck on several ideas at once. I do end up writing them down thought, trying to take maybe pieces and putting them together somehow. Brainstorming and writing the script can be just one buss mess though, but I guess at those moment you have to just chop it down to something simple.

Sometimes, what is "perfect" in your head can just slow you down. I find this all the time when I'm directing theater...we only have a month or so to put a show together, and I get about 15 different ideas for what we could do to make the show AWESOME, but then time and resources get away from me, and I start cutting things down to what we can accomplish with what we have, and it's just fine. Maybe challenge yourselves to make a month's worth of weekly "bare bones" videos to see how that goes. You may surprise yourselves with how little it can take to actually create some really great content.
