Custom Thumbnails- A Cohesive Look or Better To Be Different?

SubjectSarah

I Love YTtalk
I've got custom thumbnails today and so have spent a short while making and uploading some. At first I thought it might be good to have a similar kind of look throughout the whole channel, like a set branding, but now I'm looking at it, I can't decide if it's a good thing or more of a bad thing, all the videos looking relatively similar.

What do you feel is the best approach to custom thumbnails? Do you make your thumbnails very similar to each other or do you go for a completely different look each time?

At first i had the same idea with my lets plays and did it but now i don't cuz i find it looks better to have them different i use only the lets play game logo and ep number but other than i find a cut scene or something to make each one different so id make them different and if you wish similar in some way

I don't like uniform colored and styled thumbnails.
Though I'm probably being a hypocrite, because I sometimes do that with my series, but that's because I'm also a lazyass.

Remember that the thumbnail is the poster for your video and almost entirely what people will base their decision on for whether or not they are going to watch your video. That's the number one question you should always be asking yourself "Does this thumbnail make people want to click the video?" and also "does this thumbnail accurately represent what's inside the video?" (because obviously people will leave if they are watching a video that they feel isn't what they expected from the thumbnail.

With that said, I definitely like to utilize the thumbnails to keep a consistence branding across our videos. We even take it a step further and use the thumbnail background color to distinguish between our Thursday Sketches (blue background) and Random Monday Vlogs (green background). I like where you are headed with your thumbnails, but they almost all look exactly the same to me. I would try really getting creative to add some more variety. I also personally avoid adding too many words (if any at all) because 1) They're already going to read the title of the video 2) It's too small to read when it's in the related video section of YouTube. Just my thoughts. Hope this help somewhat!

Thank you so much for the very helpful responses- I've spent the last few hours redoing some- grown to kind of love the purple look so will wait and see what the spiffy new thumbnails look like when they're finished updating and will decide tomorrow with a fresh pair of eyes! Thanks again for the tips! :)

I've always thought of thumbnails as one of the most important tools to make your videos more attractive. Before I was making videos, I would only click on videos that had thumbnails because I knew that you had to work to get them, and it would be the best way to get reliable information. So an attractive looking thumbnail is the key to something :p

Yours look incredible to, even made me click on the video on in your signature :3

Since I run a gaming channel, I've got a set thumbnail for each video game I post, so not all are the same. But let's say for each thumbnail for Minecraft, I always try to follow the same design but different colors, fonts and all that, variety is what I go for while keeping it uniform! :D
