Custom Thumbnail Help

Hey so I have been changing a lot of stuff up on my channel mostly involving branding and adding some things that may have been needed. And what I wanna try next is to add some custom thumbnails.

Now what I wanna ask is what all would be beneficial in the actual thumbnail, like should I throw in words and backgrounds or would that make it too over the top. And also the channel is a comedy channel so I'm not sure what to actually put as the thumbnail except an actual frame from the video.
Any help on what I should do?

Basically, I capture screenshot from video, I choose the picture with catchy expression, and then I combine all the pictures and put a background color, so most of my thumbnails are like that

Where'd you get your background from? Did you make it yourself or just found a simple background?

some of them I make myself or else I find free backgrounds on google

Photoshop is the best but if You want something free to use than GIMP is a great alternative.

For my videos I use Sony Vegas but I don't have any kind of photoshop type software so I may just go with Gimp because it's free
