Creative process

Hey guys, i vlog and i need to ask something to fellow vloggers out there. Firstly, do you guys script your vlogs before you record or do you kind of just turn on the cam and talk? I never script them so i usually find my final edit to be 4-6 minutes long which you know is ok but as a new tuber people tend to lose interest quick, so shorter videos seem to be the way. so if you do script it how do you manage the time or do you just not care about that sort of thing?

Thanks!
Jacob

First off, not a vlogger :) Chose to read on or not

When it comes to creating quality content, unless someone is the worlds greatest ad-liber, I have a hard time seeing how scripting is NOT helpful. I think one of the most common misconceptions about scripting is that you have to say exactly what is on your script at the exact way it is scripted out. What scripting does, is allow you to convey all of your thought process, all of your ideas, all of what you are feeling and thinking into a succinct document - read it, practice it out loud and get yourself ready. Basically what you are doing is taking an extra 30 minutes to prepare, for your users, something that makes sense and something that flows.

Another real benefit of scripting is that you have taken what you are going to say, off of your mind. So when you are in front of the camera, doin y0 thang, you don't have to constantly be thinking about what you are saying, and instead give yourself the freedom to be creative, hand gestures, facial expressions, specific inflections on areas of your vlog that you would want to press home...etc...

Hope this makes sense.

I've made some videos where I've scripted what I want to say because I have a great idea I don't want to forget. With the videos where I just want to give people some info, I just talk. I made a few videos then I wanted to tell people a bit more about me so I just flowed. I think scripting is good so that you don't forget. Also I find it takes some pressure off as sometimes I've had a long day at work anmy mind is elsewhere. It helps me focus.

I never script any specific lines or anything like that. I just write an outline of exactly what I want to talk about. Pretty much...

Me: Hmm... Okay, I'll talk about Battleground from last night.
Me: *Grabs camera*

That kind of thing, and honestly, that might be my downfall. I think I should script myself a bit more. As for my final product, it usually ends up being somewhere between 6-15 minutes without any editing. Meh... I'll probably try scripting eventually.

I don't think there's anything wrong with not writing everything out completely. It depends what you're doing you video about. I think if you're vlogging it shouldn't look too scripted. Plus there may be something you think of on the fly that's funny/thought provoking/interesting.

Not a vlogger either, but a frequent public speaker.

When interacting with an audience, a speaker's personality, energy and image are all as important as the final message, so it's up to you to strike a balance: you may not want to over-script things down to a word and lose your spontaneity, but having a mental image in your mind of what you want to say and how each part leads into the next is extremely helpful. There are very few people I know who can talk off the top of their heads and still be engaging, and those are usually the ones who have been doing public speaking of some sort for many, many years.

Another alternative to scripting is re-recording the same vlog over and over. As you record you'll notice things that bother you and fix them in the re-recording. This can take several iterations until you get it down right. Time consuming but works for some.
