Cover Songs...

What are the rules? So can you do a cover? I mean if you play the song on your own guitar and record it and sing the lyrics... is this allowed?

I think it heavily depends on your network, since I have heard some networks have contracts with some recording publishers, which give permit. Plus the country in question plays an important role, similarly like, from what I know, in USA if you do a parody you can use footage or material from the object you are parodying since it is derivative work, where as in UK you can parody, but you can not use any of the original footage, so its bonkers :D

So what is the correct advice.

Copyrighted content is copyrighted in multiple ways. An aspect of copyright is attached to the composition as well as to the performance. So in order to perform a cover song that is outside of the realm of fair use, one must obtain the appropriate permissions. Fair use is where things get edgy. You can parody the work in a cover song under fair use and this has in past been deemed ok, but remember that a parody makes fun of the original composition, it's not just turning a song into jokes which is referred to as Satire instead. I'll use Weird Al as an example. His cover song of let's say "Gangstas' Paradise" | "Amish Paradise" is a Satire, not a Parody as it uses the original song in order to make fun of other things. Whereas his song "Smells like Nirvana" would be considered a Parody as it makes fun specifically of the original song and artist.

In Weird Als' case, he always gets approval from the artists anyways but he would not be required to do so for the songs that are true parodies.

The second aspect of copyright is performance. This is how you can get a content match for things like the happy birthday song or old classical music. Yes, the source composition has become public domain, but when a group of people like an orchestra perform and record this content, they maintain a copyright on that performance. So you can play your own cover of that material, but you can't reupload or use their specific performance of it without their permission.
