Copyright Takedown Abuse

Horror Versions
Hey guys. So recently I had one of my videos taken down by another channel. I assume this kid didn't like the video I put up and reported it for infringing his copyright. My video does use content owned by Warner Bros., and they have a claim on the video, but this kid is not associated with them at all. He had made a video using the same content and, from what I can tell, reported me for copying his idea, even though I had never seen his video or channel before.

I filed a counter notification, sent him a few emails, and commented on the video he did that was kinda similar, telling him that he abused the copyright system and to retract his takedown. His response? "no go to hell b***h"

Once my video was back up (because he obviously didn't sue me to keep it down), I made a video about what happened. He and his friend found it and weren't happy. Basically called me ugly and dumb, cited their high IQ, and said they would "sue my butt".

Luckily, he has his real name and city of residence publicly available, and searching for the last name and location on Facebook led me pretty easily to his dad. While I don't expect much more trouble from this boy, I figured it's something his parent should be aware that his 12-year-old son is doing. So I sent the following message on Facebook to his dad a little bit ago:

Hello,
I'm a YouTuber like your son, Mal. Recently, he reported one of my videos for infringing his copyright, meaning he told YouTube that I put a video on my channel that belongs to him, which I never did. In doing so, he has initiated a formal legal process and by law, my video had to be taken down. I provide for a family of 4 and I depend on YouTube for part of my income. This has had an effect on that. I got the situation fixed on my end, but I thought you should know about the type of activities your son is partaking in with his YouTube channel. I hope you have a nice day.

We'll see if anything further happens from here.

hmm. Might not be helpful. Can't assume parents to be responsible. More often they are worse than the kids and likely the focus of the learnt anti social behaviour. You don't wanna get drawn into a never ending email tennis grudge match. Better to move on I think. Sorry to hear you had this bad experience though. Ps. wth did you do to Sooty. lol tv favourite of mine. Also.. Best magician in world! I don't think he is known in US.

there is a legal responsibility for kids under a certain age depending on every countrie's laws.
Although the kid just performed a bad attitude and not something illegal, parents should be informed.
As you say they might be worse than kids (that is from where kids take examples how to react maybe...)
but they should be informed anyway.

He and his friend found it and weren't happy.

eh... this is not your problem I think...
You just said your part of the story.
You do not want to make war or drama on Youtube.

:)

To me it sounds like you are doing everything correctly. If I was in your shoes I would probably do the same thing honestly. File a counter claim and then send a message to the parents.

Although one more thing I'd do would be to block any and all channels associated with this kids as well.

Thanks! Regarding blocking him, though, I agree with that in general, but as for me, I like the drama and wouldn’t want to block it.
