I have gotten content claims on original content as well. There are lots of sites that offer free commercial use music, and many partnership programs also offer music libraries, as does youtube.
To me, there is no reason to use a famous song. If people wanted to listen to it, they would be on the Vevo, not your video.
The only part I get into grey lines on is covers of songs, but just to be safe, I always use my partner manager as a fair-use checker.
Hmm, I'm trying to get partnered but 3 Turned me down.... Machinima, Fullscreen, CreatorX/:

By your subscriber count, I'd wait a bit longer and rank yourself up a bit in subs before you apply for a network.

For whatever material you use, check the license. That's what you'll use to defend yourself if you're challenged anyway. If you can't find a license and you didn't make it yourself, don't use it, because without a license all the rights to a particular work remain with the copyright holder. If you DO use it, then you run the risk of getting a complaint or a Content ID match. If you get a Content ID match or copyright complaint on your original material or material you have permission to use (via a licensing agreement), then you can dispute it and youtube might reverse their strike/match.

As for fair use, that's a defense to copyright infringement, i.e. a way to avoid liability in court for using copyrighted material without permission. Generally Youtube seems like it couldn't care less about it.

This! Youtube uses algorithms to flag, not people. Even if you are legally within your rights, YouTube is allowed to have more strict standards, making fair use nearly irrelevant. It frustrated me at first, but now I have come to understand/accept it
