I think a major part of YouTube is connections. I remember with my old channel I got Pewdiepie (if you don't know him he is a Swedish gamer who does a lot of funny let's plays) to watch one of my videos. I'm not saying we worked together but I got my name out somewhat.
It is HUGE to know people in this world, so the more people you work with, the more people who can help you with your videos, the more views you will get, because the people involved in your videos will spread the word.
For instance, I am going to Boston this weekend to visit my brother who is in the music business. He has a lot of friends who are musical artists (and I really want to do a music video), and he also has friends who are photographers/video dudes. Some of his friends do camera work for the Boston Celtics! I think that's sick and if I can meet them, it only helps me get my name out there.
