Channels which people simply post existing material

I'm new to Youtube in general, want to get started on a channel of my own but that's a topic for another time.

My question was - I've seen many, many channels in which people just post songs, movies, videos etc - which aren't their own. I have a few questions about that :

1. How do they get around copyright issues?

2. Are they monetizing it? If so, how?

3. Do people like just...get random videos and post them? I'm not quite sure how it all works!

Sorry if the questions seem newbieish, I am very new to all this!

It's depends some companies like Fox, Sony and etc will give a copyright strike you have to get permission to use that content

1. The owner of the content either doesnt care, and releases the claim on the videos that get made automatically by YouTube's content ID system, or FAR more likely:

2. They are not monetising it. The proper owner of the video is running the ads on it and all money goes to them. It's the only reason the video is still public on YouTube.

3. In general you don't do it if you call yourself a YouTuber, more if your just making some lyrics video for a song or just giving people a movie on YouTube which will likely get taken down in the next few months. More than likely you'll end up with a few strikes to your channel and because of that no actual YouTubers do it. Just people that want to chuck up some lyrics vids and what not.

I think there's a real cottage industry in people putting up channels, posting content that doesn't get copyright caught within the first few months, gets a ton of views, and they then close up shop and do it again. I don't know if they're able to monetize in any real way, or if it's just to present content that people can't see otherwise (there are a lot of BBC shows I've seen that aren't available in the US except for surreptitious uploads to YouTube), but I find it to be difficult to feel anything but a bit annoyed that they collect viewers so quickly when people (like me!) are trying to do something at least somewhat original and have to fight for every viewer.

Thanks for all the replies, I'm learning a lot! So they don't monetize the videos at all but just post for general enjoyment? Like I keep on seeing all these videos from the 60s with millions of hits...you could make a pretty penny if you were monetizing them.

What's the status on covers? That's what I plan to do when I start my own channel. :)

The person with the channel doesn't care, or doesn't know

Ok, so what's the deal with that? They just put up random songs?

So there is no way to know if something is being monetized or not?
