I have yet to add a channel trailer. It was something that I was planning on adding once I have uploaded more videos, but after looking at many channels I subscribe to, I noticed that many do not use one.

So my question is: Is a channel trailer necessary?

Are there any case studies that show it does increase subscriber sign up rates?

In the meantime, I am thinking about just using the trailer to display one of my most popular videos, rather than a video that informs people who I am, what the channel offers etc. I think this could also be a good alternative to a direct "Who this channel is for" type video.

Would love to hear your thoughts on channel trailers, whether you think they are necessary, and whether you are using one yourself :)

We've never used one (we usually use one of our latest videos) and we're doing just fine. Just remember what the channel trailer feature is designed to do-to autoplay and give potential viewers a taste of what your channel is all about. If you have a video that does that, there's no reason you can't use that in place of a formal trailer.

It's like a movie trailer. If someone is just browsing through channels and they have something that catches their eye it could get someone interested in your content and they could be a new fan.

A video specifically made to be a trailer isn't necessary. However it is useful to have some kind of video there to help attract more people's attention. Perhaps use one of your popular videos instead.

Even though I don't have one, I think it is necessary. It gives the viewer an overall idea what your channel about. But I also feel like you have to be careful at how you present your trailer because it could also discourage people from subscribing. That's what has kept me from not doing one yet...I need the right vision and creativity for it.

I feel like a well done Channel Trailer is very effective to gaining new subscribers, this is because in a well done Channel Trailer you get the main idea of your channel out to the potential subscribers. If you're straight and to the point then it makes a person more likely to see more of your content.

Thanks for all the feedback.

For the time being, I think displaying one of my most popular videos is the best option. Then later I can record a channel trailer video and see if it helps increase my subscriber sign up rate.
