Alright so you have decide to look at this thred... good :D.
Okay first things first, Trust me here im in your boat... my solo commentating skills are that of a 6 year olds! :p but! i Have found a quick easy fun and entertaining way out of it!

So first things first Get Into the mind set of what you will be doing! Your going to have to know how your going to edit your video while recording otherwise it will seem a bit sketchy

Second Things Second: Make sure to have some time on your hands! This one is important... If you want a good quality video, your going to want to spend time on it... nobody likes a video that was just just threw together! Videos take time to edit!

Third Things Third: Get to know your editing software! It is important to know what the heck your working with here... get to know your editing software.. even if it is windows live movie maker! Editing will take so much less time if you know where everything is!

Forth Things Forth: Cuts This is the most important of ALL OF THESE so pay attention! Forget about your dogs for a second because cuts are going to be your new best friend! This is what separates your boring solo commentary to being a funny entertaining video. The trick is simple... cuts out all of the boring stuff... and when i mean boring i mean like when your not talking or when your just kinda mumbling and nothings happening! The amount of cuts you choose is dependent of what kind of video you want to put out ( a walkthrough, lets play, silly fun etc. )

Fifth Things Are of Course Fifth: Be positive! If your video doesn't get any views... take it as a learning experience.. don't be sad about it... if you have a great video it will get recognized! So on that note im going to leave you guys!
Happy editing,
8bit

Also another unheard of tip that my friend told me was that smile while talking makes your voice sound better. I don't do solo commentaries but a lot people have told me that it's worked well

That's so true! It seems to come across in the video pretty well most of the time!
Strange, but true ;)
