Can't Go Back and Edit Text Media In Sony Vegas

I've noticed that when I am using Sony Vegas, I can't go back and edit the text media if I have moved on from it to create other text. I am having a rough time with the layout and it took me forever to even make the text media box appear. It doesn't appear as a pop up, it appears in the middle of the video preview and the other box at the top. I have sony vegas pro 12.

So when I was making my mini documentary, I wanted to use written text to highlight some of the important things that were said and once I moved on to the next sentence in a new text media box, I couldn't re open the other one to edit it. I had to create a new text media box and replace the old one. Does this make sense?
 
Every piece of text on your timeline should have 3 icons on it. To edit the text itself, click the first icon that looks like a piece of film roll. This will open the media generator and allow you to change everything about your text. The next icon is a rectangular shape and is used to move the location of the text. The last icon is like a T-shape and is used for applying any effects.
