Can you do Youtube as well as be in the Military?

I've Got It
Hey guys. So, to start this off, I'm really really hoping to get into the military mid-2017 (I'm planning on enlisting in August), and I've always thought youtube was pretty cool, but I also know it takes a long time to get popular on it and get a good subscriber count. So, what I'm wondering is, do you think you'd be able to run a youtube channel while being in the Military?

Before you answer, here are a few things I'd like to point out. The branch I'll be going in would just be regular army, and from there I'd hope to move up to be a Green Beret and so on and so forth. So, I know that sometimes there will be weeks where you're training and don't even have access to electronics, and also, there is Basic Training. So that'd be 3 months of inactivity, and I don't know how long after basic training it is before you're allowed to play video games again.
The other thing I'd like to point out is, what is my channel about? Right now it's all about gaming, my plan is to play lots of heavily storyline based games and upload gameplay of that without any commentary (I tried the whole commentary thing before, didn't like it), so it'd probably take quite a while before I would get a decent subscriber count, but then when I enlist I'd basically just be abandoning the whole thing, at least until I was able to play video games again.

What are you're guys' thoughts on this? Should I just not even try? Should I see if I could get a friend that could upload videos when I'm away? Should I try to do this and when I'm unable to upload, that's just the way it'll be?

Hi, there was a thread that sort of touched on this subject a while ago -> http://yttalk.com/threads/get-to-re...army-but-dont-know-what-videos-to-make.246589

Maybe you could ask the OP of that thread for some more info. :)

I know that the moderator said to check out the other form...but I'm just going to put my input here anyways. My good friend was just in the army for a good five years, stationed everywhere. He uploaded ALL the time..I'm not sure if it was because of what he specialized in..but if I were you I would just wait until you're out of basic training to get a jump on it. Then you wouldn't feel like you're leaving something behind and wondering how the channel is doing :)

I can guess that military are secretive on what they do during what games and stuff, so it would be probably be good to film during your free time!

Maybe you can't upload as frequently, but if you love what you're doing and make good content, you will be fine no matter where you are doing it.

That is true, thanks for the input :)

I've seen quite a few channels with people who are actively serving in the military and release regular content. I think during basic training phase you'd be too busy and will struggle to make content (you could take advantage of the weekends you return home though that will not be much). You may adjust your approach and decide to make some vlogs while training but once you have passed training I'm pretty sure you'll get enough time to make regular content again. You could possibly still make a decent amount of videos while in basic training but it'll be much harder and I'd imagine you'd have to pre-record some and schedule it for when you are absent.

Thanks man, I appreciate the input.

I think I may have gotten it figured out, I have a friend who is running the channel with me, so when I'm gone he can keep the uploads going and everything, and I can do the same for him when he's busy. If neither of us are busy then we just go back and forth with the uploading.

Again, I appreciate everybodies input on this thread :)

I didn't read all of the replies so it might have already been covered but you don't necessarily have to be inactive for weeks/months at a time if you schedule your videos to come out when you are in the field/training. If you are deployed that is another matter but you should otherwise be fine if you prepare ahead of time.

The best Internet I ever had was when I was stationed in South Korea.

I miss those days...
