Can I claim my videos myself? Monetizing cover songs

Hi!

I want to make cover songs on youtube and eventually monetize them. But from what I've gathered I have to wait until i get a content ID claim on my video before I can monetize it, and share revenue with the copyright owner. But I have some covers I uploaded in 2012 (on my old channel) and they still haven't gotten any content ID claims. In fact, I have never gotten one. Can I do this myself somehow to make the process go faster?

Or, can I monetize my video anyway? I know I can.. like, it's possible to just monetize it. But I would like to do this as legally as possible, and I'm afraid that if I monetize my videos and eventually get that content ID claim they will see that I have been making money from their copyrighted material.

Or how does it work if one of my already monetized videos gets claimed?

Thanks!

I think you have to wait for the content ID claim - that is certainly my experience. I have some old covers of copyright material on my channel (dating back to 2008), and I never monetised them, knowing that they were in copyright. One of them was a cover of a piano piece by Einaudi. Suddenly, this year - at least five years after I recorded it - I had a notice that it had been blocked in some countries! Fortunately that does not seem to count as a copyright strike, and my standing has not been affected. On one or two other old videos, the copyright status page has 'invited' me to monetise them and share revenues. Most of my videos are performances of music that is in the public domain (in Europe at least) and I monetise these as a matter of course, and have never had any problems.

I monetize all of my covers -- a lot of video game music is not in the content ID database, so they do not get automatically recognized. I find that whether I monetize or not, if they are recognized in the content ID database, then I'll get a checkbox saying whether it's an original cover (in which case revenue sharing is possible), and I just check that box.

Thanks for replying guys. This is a bit annoying and I hope that YouTube will improve their system in the future. I have decided not to monetize anything until I reach my initial goal of 100 subs. Once things get rolling I might do itor I might use something like "We are the hits" to make sure I got the law on my side and I can monetize from day one.

Thanks!

Just another example of how this all works. I received the following notice today about a video that I recorded seven years ago of a piano piece by Philip Glass:

"
Dear PSearPianist,

Your video "Philip Glass: ' Metamorphosis One ' from piano cycle ' Metamorphosis '", may have content that is owned or licensed by SACEM, PRS CS, and Exploration_Group_LLC, but it’s still available on YouTube! In some cases, ads may appear next to it.

If this is your performance of a third party song then you can still make money from this video. Click here to change your monetisation settings.

This claim is not penalising your account status. Visit your Copyright Notice page for more details on the policy applied to your video.

- The YouTube Team"

Actually I was able to tick the box and acknowledge that it was a cover, so I have no problem with that!
