Best Monetization Strategy For You

Hey, guys.

Does anyone know of any guidelines as far as determining what monetization strategies are right for us? Or are there too many variables to make generalizations?

I plan on doing a variety of things on my channel, but mostly it's gonna be me Vlogging about anything from things I think are funny or weird to philosophy and politics, and I have no idea what kind of monetization those chat & discussion channels lend themselves to. I could be wrong, but I don't see a lotta T-shirts and mugs coming outta that. Maybe an eBook. What does Jenna Marbles do?

What do you think? Any ideas?

Thanks, everyone. ^_^

I am a gaming channel, but vlogs are longer videos as well so this might help. I started adding a card linked to an older video every 3-4 minutes. This increased views and revenue by about 20%. I think it could have gone higher but soon after I took a break.

YouTube viewers are used to seeing about any kind of ad so I enable them all. The only thing is that if you use ad breaks you should really tailor your video towards them.

I'm not just talking about where to place my ads and how many to use. I'm also talking about merchandising and affiliate marketing and crowd funding and so forth. It's my understanding that ads don't bring in that much money, anyway.

So if you are talking brand deals or e.g. affiliate links then they work best if the product fits your channel content. It e.g. doesn't make much sense to promote beauty products on the average woodworking channel.
The latest time to start selling merch would be when your fans start asking regularly about it. I think it doesn't make too much sense to start selling T-Shirts with your logo before you have a certain following.
Sorry for not being detailed but your question is kind of vague for me.

That makes sense, but what about channels where you just sit there and talk about something? What kind of monetization makes sense for a channel like that?

You mean vlog channels? These would need to choose topics where they can talk about a certain brands.

That can't be the only option, though. I don't think the stuff I wanna talk about on my channel really lends itself to any obvious products or services. Shoe-horning in something like that would likely be out of step with the rest of my content. I think I'm better off writing an eBook, but that would probably consist mainly of vlog transcripts and why would anyone wanna buy a book of a bunch of stuff they can already see for free on YouTube?

I should've just titled this one "How to monetize your vlog", 'cause that's really what I wanna know.

Well a video can't contain every detail. Written tutorials can often be more precise. You can offer more close-up pictures and measurements e.g. for tutorials.
You could still go for brand deals e.g. by wearing certain clothes.[DOUBLEPOST=1453465797,1453459120][/DOUBLEPOST]@Tim Schmoyer just put up a video about the six most common revenue streams for YouTube videos by the way.
