Benefits of Joining a Network as a Small YouTuber

Happy Hour

We like to party and stuff
We're still a very small channel (only 160 subscribers) however we hear all the time how people are joining networks. I know it would be beneficial as a bigger channel. But what are the benefits of joining as a small channel? What can they do for us that we can't do ourselves? Thanks!

There is more benefit as a small channel then there is as a big channel and mainly the big benefit is getting stuff like Epidemic Sounds. Epidemic Sounds and Tube Buddy are the only reason I'm even in a network at my size.. When you begin to lose more than your getting from the network that is when you leave and buy the stuff yourself.

Once i joined a small network. I did a video for them and it was the most viewed. Brought nothing to my channel cause they were lazy/unlegit. So like the upper one said: only if you get more than you give ;)

In my opinion there's no real advantage to joining a network as a smaller channel. If you use a lot of music, some networks can give you access to huge catalogs of royalty free tunes and sounds, but finding royalty free music on your own is also very easy.

Since you don't make gaming videos, you're likely to get a more competitive CPM rate from Adsense monetization as well, and you'll avoid any potential revenue split with a network.

That's what I was thinking. We don't have a problem with getting our own royalty free music and, so far, that's been every networks' main selling point.

Networks want to promote themselves and grow. So they promote their bigger channels in order to do that.

Barely. Unless you're in the top 5% of channels, they won't do anything more for you than they would someone in the bottom 5%.

...but, to be at that point, you're not just a big channel- you're huge gaining millions of views a month.

Soooo to that point... What do they do for small channels?

Most will have some music licenses you can use... but, nowadays, many music offerings are available free from YouTube or could be found free online. An added bonus to using YouTube's (or any of the royalty free music available online) being that you don't have to worry about what may happen to your videos if you ever choose to leave said network.

They'll typically have a dashboard and better tools to help you with YouTube. They'll do such things as give you better descriptions or keywords to tag, better breakdowns of videos, and possibly even suggest better times of the day to make your videos public. Much like with the music, many of these features could be found free (or for a minimal cost) online elsewhere... without having to sign away a percentage of your earnings.

The only things a network may actually be useful for are if you live in an area not officially covered by Adsense, you wish to receive payments lower than the $100 Adsense requires, or if you're in a high copyright risk genre and want a little bit more added protection.

Don't expect networks to help in advertising or promotion, finding you sponsors or better paying ads, or doing much of anything outside of skimming their 10-40% off of your earnings.
