Background music in videos or not?

Juzey

I Love YTtalk
I've recently started to put background music in my videos, since I've noticed most other YouTubers have background music, but I'm now wondering if that was actually a good idea. When I'm watching videos, background music doesn't add to my enjoyment of the video at all - I either don't notice it or find it slightly distracting.
Do people generally like background music in videos? Should I continue to include background music in my videos or not?

For me it depends what is actually happening in the video. For example music can add value when you show time-lapse footage. I know Kwebbelkop for just experience with stuff like that. He tried background music, tried different volume levels, tried without music and so on. Afterwords he checked his analytics (and probably the comments) to see if the viewers behavior changed and if so, what did they prefer?

It depends on the content of the video, if you're sitting there and chatting on the video then it's not really needed. But if you're doing a tutorial where there are some pauses of you not talking then yes you should add some background music just not to make it an awkward silence even if it's just a few seconds.

Actually my channel trailer (user: AnnaliseTV), I think is a good example of how to switch up the background music here and again to keep people interested and make some points dramatic!

A very low background music even if you're talking is acceptable. If you have to concentrate to hear it instead of the person talking it's usually good, that means the music don't interfere with the speech. But if you do, make sure it's a music that "fits" with the level of energy displayed in the video!

Music in the background gives the video a little more atmosphere
People who do daily vlogs when they are out and about probably wont put in music because there is already a lot going on in the background
But if you are making videos at home on your own, it just makes the video a little more interesting and it is a nice touch to make your day :)

For the kind of videos you do it can compliment it depending on the track you use, I would try it out and see if you like it and if others do too, make sure to keep it very low on parts where you are talking and check through headphones and speakers to see if it sounds good. Listening through headphones to most YouTube videos really brings out the background music when through speakers it wasn't that loud at all.

Thanks for all the advice, guys! I'll experiment a bit to see what works.

It kind of depends I guess. I see some of my videos that have been up for a while where I find the music kind of annoying or it doesn't fit. Other times it works perfectly. My buddy just started a new channel, I like the way he implements music and I think it does actually make the video better. You just need to make it mesh well with the feel of the video. Here's one of my buddy's recent videos, I think the music fits perfectly

I prefer having background music :) Not sure what software you use, but I lower the music during talking and then raise it up when there's only dead air. It really sets the mood/tone of the video
