Hey guys I have an idea to make an audio book from a book Im interested in.

Do I need to get permission from author or is this safe?

You would definitely need to get permission, but it's possible that the author doesn't have permission to give it -- you might need to work with the publisher or another party.

It would be very interesting if you could do it, but I'd imagine authors/publishers might want to retain the right to get a professional audiobook created, you know?

But these books are being forgotten by the public thats why I want to restore it through alternative media. People are not reading these books anymore, but they are very important to society

How bout old books written hundreds of years ago? Do I need to get permission from the publisher then?

Sounds a lot of work :\

You have hit on the one major exception -- books published (at least in the United States) before 1923 would be in the public domain, and therefore it would be OK to do audiobooks based on them. (In fact, there are groups doing just that [see LibriVox]). Books in public domain in the US might not be public domain elsewhere, and vice versa -- for example, translations are considered new works, so if a book was first published elsewhere before 1923, but it was translated and published in the US after 1923, it would not be public domain in the US.
