Are DSLRs worthwhile?

I've Got It
Hey yttalklings

I was just pondering on the idea of getting a dslr camera to record my videos in... So I have a free questions!

1) do you have to get external microphones for them and if so, how much would a decent one cost?
2) do the video files take longer to process on YouTube than a standard camcorder footage? And if so, how much longer will it take to upload?

3)would it even be worthwhile for my channel? Like, am I okay without one or would it make for better, cleaner, more professional videos or would it not make much difference for my channel? I'm still a pretty small youtuber but I VLOG etc, so by all means go and have a look at the type of videos I do - I'm not doing professional short-movies or anything so is a dslr necessary Or is it just more of a luxury for the standard vlogger?

Thanks in advance guys! I'm probably looking at ones between £150 and £250 if that helps!

1) Yes, the internal mic in most DSLR's are rubbish! Look up any Rode mic, they vary in price
2) Depends! More than likely the file sizes will be very very similar to a camcorder, all depends on which one
3) You can get good enough camcorders for your price range, maybe don't get a DSLR as many in that price range will lack autofocus etc. Just make sure you get a camcorder with a mic in!

Very worth it. I have the Canon Rebel T2i and have been loving it.

1) Yes, like the post above, I recommend a Rode microphone. The regular mic is terrible.
2) It depends on a lot of things, but filesize and format are what determine processing times.
3) Yes, people will take you more seriously.

The "people will take you more seriously" thing isn't that important, Like slapping a matte box on a DSLR, it looks very professional to the bystander but it won't guarantee you make better videos.

I have the Canon Revel t3i, it's pretty good, but to really get the maximum potential out of it, you'd have to buy a really expensive lens. I have a Rode Mic and it's all fuzzy unless I plug it into the computer to record at the same time as the video, so I don't know if my mic is s**t or what.

We use Canon 60D on our channel. Although, that looks to be a bit above your price range. The Rode Mic is a great mic for beginners, although we find a lot of room sound when using them, for your vlog style it might work just fine. Otherwise the Azden Lapel mics are really cheap, $15 and with an extension cable make great sounding mics.

If all your planning on doing is vlogs then I would go with something more vlog oriented, like a Canon Powershot. A lot of Youtubers that do vlogs use that camera or one that is similar.

I wouldn't say you HAVE to buy a really expensive lens. I currently have a 60D with only a Canon 50mm f1.8 II, and despite it being a $100 lens, it has produced some pretty beautiful video. Now it's a prime lens, so it has no zoom, and because the 60D has a cropped sensor on top of the 50mm being kind of narrow, it's even more narrow. So you have to be much farther away to get yourself in the shot. Other than that, it's an excellent lens for the money... if you have the room to shoot with it.

Ah yes, I have that 50mm lens as well. I have no idea how to vlog with it because you have to be so far away and you can't get it in focus if you walk away...gahhh.

Well, in terms of the focus, it's a little tricky. If you us a prop that's approximately as far away as you're going to be, then make sure the aperture is something around a 6.0 or above, the amount of leeway you have to focus with is decent. I personally only use manual focus, makes it easier to get the shot you want without AF going nuts.
