Am I Crazy for not Scripting my Reviews?

Hey YTTalk,

So I have a question for people in this sub-forum as you all seem to write scripts and/or want to.

Am I out of my mind for not using scripts?! I do video game reviews of indie games specifically. I've always been told my commentary is great, voice is great, I have little to no umms/pauses, it flows very well, doesn't have that scripted feel, etc.

That being said, I know from self-critique that I do have pauses/umms at times, I repeat myself very seldomly or stumble just a tad occasionally (though I usually edit that out and redo it), and I feel MAYBE a script would help?

Currently I have a guideline for the top-level comments I want to cover, like an outline of just what points I want to hit. This is not specific to the game, just an outline I use on every review. I cover gameplay, visuals, audio, replayability, drawbacks, and a conclusion. Literally thats the outline, that's it, I don't add notes before the review, etc.

Concerns with scripts:
  1. Sounding well, scripted. My trailer (in sig) was scripted by me, and I think I did an okay job not sounding too robotic, but its scripted and I've always been able to EASILY tell when someone is using a script.
  2. Time to write a script - Well this is just my thing, but I feel I put myself out there as it is time wise and have a lot of real world constraints. Adding another 30 mins of scripting to every video would just be a pain in the butt right now.
Pros with scripts:
  1. Maybe I'll sound more professional/less pauses/umms?
  2. I can upload a CC file and maybe even start having someone translate it to other languages to perhaps increase viewing audience?
  3. I'll be a tad better with the flow of content as I say it, rather than literally coming up with it on the fly with little to no thought before hand.

Like, I play a game for awhile, record the footage, do audio commentary usually within a day or two (if not right after), edit it all and render/upload. I don't put long thoughts into what I'll say, it comes naturally. Is that crazy!?

I think that scripts are not for everyone. Personally, they help me organise my video and make sure I remember all I have to say, but if you can just make good content up as you go, then you don't have to use them! :)

I watched a couple of your videos and I wouldn't say you need a script. You did have some pauses and umm's but I don't personally feel they took away from the video.

Depends how you want your reviews to be. Not scripting comes across has casual and more like a chat with the person watching whereas scripting makes it seem more well worded and too the point. Neither is right or wrong, it all depends on how you want your videos to be! And no, you aren't crazy!

Hey thanks for checking some videos out, you didn't have to go through that many!

Hey thanks I appreciate it! That's really good feedback actually, I didn't think of it that way.

I think you're fine. I use bullet points in my Top 5 Anticipated Games because it sounded robotic in my top ten in my opinion. Bullet points are great and keep you on topic so I recommend it!

Its my pleasure, I was already going through your vids cause of your other post on needing a editor, when i came across this one.

Awesome thanks and PM me if you have questions!

Thanks dude! Makes sense in those cases.

I write scripts because my English is garbage.

It's easier to get a feel for what you want to say and you don't always have to go with what you have written down.

Some people can just bump out the recordings for a review like it's nothing but for others it's a lot easier with something to grasp onto I guess.

I dunno lol
