As far as I know comments don't really have an impact on seo (of course could be very very wrong) but I tend to just leave the comment alone unless its blatantly trying to bring traffic to themselves then I remove it. Sorry I can't give you a more straight forward answer hopefully someone can give you a more in depth answer soon :)

I've been having this dilemma for quite some time now too, but I've made my decision.

Comments do help bring more discussions on a video. The ones which are obviously self-promo (check out my channel or join our MCN) are removed.

Whether we like it or not, the bad ones do play a part. If you're lucky, your fans would flame the OPs and this would indirectly boost your vid rank.

Engagement is a ranking factor - so getting comments definitely helps with the ranking. Besides that, I don't think comments like "cool video" will drive a lot of traffic to other people's channels.

My understanding fits with AnnaGermanGirl -- comments classify as engagement, and engagement helps videos. The benefit of spammy comments increasing engagement outweighs the low possibility that someone clicks on them and goes to a spammy channel.

(That being said, I usually will NOT approve spam comments that explicitly say, "CHECK MY CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE" because I think that's just annoying.)

I mean comments are fun but uh

I guess these are better than the sub4sub guys and they make me laugh so whatever.

I don't mind those types of comments, if they're not too blatant. I mean, if someone wants to come over to your video and comment in order to bring people to their channel in a "subtle" way (ha!) then go for it. They're innocuous and I usually say, "Thank you!"

There are a couple of people who leave the exact same comment on every video I post, and it's hilarious to me that they go into the spam folder every single time, but that seems to be their technique.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I guess that makes sense after all. I'll keep that in mind on the commetns going forward~
