12 year old YouTuber gets "swatted"

Crown

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
(For those of you who don't know - "Swatting" is a cruel "prank" where the victim is a YouTuber doing a livestream. Someone watching the livestream thinks it's hilarious to call the police and report a crime or emergency at the livestreamers house. The result is that the police (or SWAT team) raid the house. )

So yeah, this is the story of a poor 12 year old kid who was livestreaming and got swatted by some jealous viewer, probably jealous of the kid's success. The kid's mother was also in the house at the time and both were obviously shaken up.

Extract of story:

  • Peter Varady, and his mother, Carol, were victims of 'swatting' on Sunday night
  • Peter, 12, was live-streaming himself playing a video game on YouTube when police and paramedics descended on his family home
  • Officials were responding to a hoax emergency call made by other YouTubers
  • The prank call suggested that Peter and his mother had hanged themselves
  • Peter said that he was terrified his family would be shot dead by police officers
  • Police took a while to realize it was a case of swatting and initially thought Peter had been posting stuff online that had led to a worried person calling 911

A 12-year-old boy and his mom were terrified they'd be shot dead by cops after becoming the latest victims of the deadly 'swatting' craze.

Peter Varady was live-streaming himself playing a video game on YouTube on Sunday night when cops and paramedics suddenly descended on his family home in California.

They were responding to a sick hoax emergency call that a mother and son were going to hang themselves.

Minutes earlier Peter had received a warning message on screen telling him he was 'getting swatted' but he didn't think it would actually happen.

Stunned mom Carol opened the door and three cops rushed in frantically asking if the pair of them were OK.

Peter told DailyMailTV: 'It's probably the most horrifying thing that's ever happened to me. It's the scariest thing.

'As soon as I walked outside and saw the cops I thought maybe they were going to point a gun at me or something, but luckily I was alright.

'I was questioning if I could have been killed. It's terrifying that at least one person knows our address and we have the chance of maybe even getting shot.'

Peter had seen the number of subscribers to his YouTube channel Rolly Ranchers rocket from just 600 to 87,000 over the weekend after he was randomly paired on a live stream game with famed YouTube gamer Cizzorz.

He had just set up a new webcam and was live-streaming himself playing the fantasy survival game Fortnite at around 8pm on Sunday when he got swatted.

He said: 'People were in my comments saying that I'm getting swatted. I didn't believe them, I thought it was just internet trolls so I ignored them.

'It was probably about 15-20 minutes after the threats were placed I saw the red lights and cops were showing up at our house. Then I realized that I did actually get swatted. I was really scared.

Can't believe people have done this. I mean is this common in the gaming community? The poor kid and his mother must have been terrified. Someone could have been killed or he could have been taken away from his family. I think there should be an investigation into it and the person brought to justice.

All that because they're jealous of his success on YouTube. Wow some people need to get another hobby if they take playing games on Youtube so seriously. Thoughts?

I heard all the swatting stories years ago but thought these pranks were over.
Someone was actually killed by SWAT just a couple of months ago from swatting. (Search Kansas swatting death)

That's terrible, feel sorry for the kid it must have been horrible. The people that call them are terrible.

real piece of s**t you have to be to swat someone, but it's far more swatting a kid. And it's been less than a month since someone was literally killed during a swatting.

Not the first time, probably not the last time. It has happened to kids younger than 12 as well. Do have to mention that this is not a ''gaming community'' issue though. It is a livestreaming community issue. I have seen it happen to people who livestream themselves walking down the street as well. The whole live thing on the internet just attracts sick minds.

i had never heard of this happening before from livestreaming, so scary. surely the person who made the call knew that it could get someone killed.

excuse my ignorance/naivety but how is their address known from livestreaming? how can you protect yourself against this happening?

No one can find out your address from livestreaming unless they actually hack into whatever platform you're using. But there's very basic things that can result in people finding your address. If you post pictures of yourself online, people can google search the image, find your social media accounts. If you have private information on your social media, doxxers will go and use that. If you have a phone number, people can look you up in the phone book. If you go to school, people might be able to find you out through that. And when you have thousands and thousands of followers, privacy on the Internet just doesn't exist anymore. It's really sad. I've ran into doxxing groups, and this is typically the stuff they do. All the information's already out there. No one needs to hack into anything.

This is terrible. unfortunately this isn’t the first time someone called the swat team on a YouTuber, I know this has happened to YouTubers Eugenia coney and marina joyice.

Felony conviction with 10-20 years and charge all minors as adults. That will go a long way to ending it!

Secondly if he’s under 13 he shouldn’t have a channel as well.
