Absolute unerring consistency.

I've released a video every day for 50 days on the trot. Currently have 56 episodes of my Cities: Skylines series online.

Now at 140 subs and 7,000+ views, which sounds impressive, but 7,000 views divided by 56 videos is 125 views per video on average.

But yes - consistency is absolutely crucial, as well as quality of course, and using decent tags for search algorithms.

Excellent work. Ur city sky series has been really successful. I can't help ask you if u posted it in forums or Reddit(your videos).

Your vids are long, 30m or so, what's ur retention? I do game reviews and I just got to 100 subs after 1 year. Slow climb for me but 2 of my vids carry most of my views, think I am at 18k now.

My retention isn't great. I have a mix of 5 minute timelapse videos and 30 minute full episodes. Average retention for the longer videos is 8-9 minutes. The timelapse ones is usually 3-4 minutes.

I've posted three screenshots on Reddit, which has had some impact in the increase in views/subs, but not massively. I also post in two separate C:S forums with updates, so yes, some self-promotion has helped.
