Yet another question about using gameplay or film footage

Sorry to ask yet another question about gameplay or film footage but I couldn't really find my answer anywhere else.

So I've been working on a video series that recaps certain gaming/tv series so people can jump on at the latest point. I'm going to start publishing it on Monday. It doesn't contain straight gameplay or full scenes just clips to help explain story beats or emphasize a point. The footage is all chopped up with heavy editing. I think it should come under fair use due to the commentary, but could someone give me some advice on whether I can or should monetize, or would it be left up if I didn't monetize it but rather just waited for a partnership to cover copyright matches.

If it's heavily edited that should be fine. Just make sure you have enough commentary on it and that the commentary is relevant to the video - e.g. something opinionated, informative or analytic to the video.

Gaming with commentary = fine
Gaming without commentary = not allowed
TV shows/movies = not allowed

That basically sums it up! :)
Is it okay to monetize if the video is a parody, consisting of primarily original content, with a few elements pulled from a TV Show / Movie (the parody would be poking fun at this show/movie)?

No. Unless you are with a network who hold licences for use of such footage, you simply cannot use it (this goes whether you are monetising or not). It must be either totally 100% original content (even parody songs for e.g. must have their own background music) or gaming footage as long as there are no cut scenes or lack of commentary.

Okay well I'll put the first few up, hope they get some traction and aim for a network partnership then. Sorry for posting a topic that I know is constantly talked about. I should be able to monetize older videos after the network partnership though right?

with gameplay, if there's consitent commentary that is relevant then it falls under fair use and is fine :) it's ALWAYS good to check out the companies' policies on such things, and READ them. There are some companies like Valve that have a page dedicated to telling you that they allow ALL their content to be monetized on Youtube which is VERY handy :)
